Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and you become starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
